Evening stars that never complete
Workshop notes on evening-star sequences that stall on the third candle — and how to mark invalidation early.
An evening star needs three parts: a strong advance, a small-bodied pause, and a decisive move lower that undercuts the midpoint of the first candle. In workshops we spend as much time on incomplete stars as on textbook ones.
The stalled third bar
Often the third candle opens weak but closes back inside the first bar’s range. Traders who shorted the open of that third bar learn an expensive lesson. We annotate these as “star attempts” in the journal rather than completed patterns.
Gap context
Stars that appear after overnight gaps on ASX names behave differently from FX stars printed mid-London session. Gap fills can masquerade as the third candle. Bring session-aware charts to class.
Practice drill
We print twelve historical evening-star candidates and ask participants to cover the right side of the page. Predicting the next three bars — then revealing them — trains humility faster than slides.
